What to check before you leave ChatGPT
Mainly your saved images and your subscription; OpenAI's help pages cover both. It's also worth knowing which picks match what ChatGPT does well.
- Every image is saved under Images in ChatGPT, and deleting one means deleting the conversation it was made in, so download the ones you want to keep before you clear old chats. (source)
- Cancel where you subscribed: on chatgpt.com, in Apple's App Store or in Google Play; uninstalling the app doesn't cancel. Paid features last until the end of the billing period, and cancelling doesn't automatically refund earlier charges. (source)
- ChatGPT's editing by description has counterparts in Midjourney's Edit model, Ideogram's Studio editor, Adobe Firefly's Generative Fill and Leonardo AI's canvas editor. Perchance and AIPhoto-Generator take text only. (sources: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6)
- If you like OpenAI's images, Adobe Firefly, Leonardo AI and Ideogram offer GPT Image models alongside their own. (sources: 1, 2, 3)
- ChatGPT images carry Content Credentials and an invisible watermark that mark them as made with OpenAI's tools. Adobe Firefly also adds Content Credentials and Midjourney a hidden ID tag; AIPhoto-Generator doesn't add a visible watermark. (sources: 1, 2, 3)
How we chose
We picked tools that make images from text in a web browser and differ from ChatGPT on at least one point: a published free allowance, no account, more control over style and models, or lettering tools. ChatGPT is strong at editing images in conversation and adding text from instructions, so each pick also says where ChatGPT remains the better fit.

Questions
Is ChatGPT image generation free?
Yes, with a limit. OpenAI's help says ChatGPT Images is available on every plan, Free included, but image creation on Free has its own usage limit, which can be stricter than on paid plans. OpenAI doesn't publish the number; when you reach it, ChatGPT tells you and you wait before making more. Go, Plus ($20 a month) and Pro have higher limits. AIPhoto-Generator gives 3 free images in total with no account, and they don't reset.
Can I use ChatGPT images commercially?
OpenAI's Terms of Use say that, as between you and OpenAI and to the extent permitted by applicable law, you own the output, and OpenAI assigns you any rights it has in it; its ChatGPT help adds that this includes the right to reprint, sell and merchandise output, on free or paid plans. Your use still has to follow its terms, which rule out presenting output as human-generated, and its Usage Policies, which rule out using someone's photorealistic likeness without their consent in ways that could confuse people about what's real. The terms also note that output may not be unique, and ChatGPT Enterprise and API use come under OpenAI's separate Business Terms. Our Terms of Service say we don't claim ownership of your images and that your rights to use them are subject to those terms and the AI model provider's terms. Before using an image commercially, make sure your use complies with both and with applicable law.
Are ChatGPT images private?
OpenAI's help says every image you make is saved under Images in your account, and anyone with a shared link from a personal account can view what it shows. On Free, Go, Plus and Pro, OpenAI may use your content to train its models unless you turn off Improve the model for everyone in Data controls; temporary chats aren't used, though rating a response lets OpenAI use that whole conversation even after you opt out. Business, Enterprise and Edu content isn't used for training by default. AIPhoto-Generator has no public gallery and delivers each image to you by link.
What's a good ChatGPT image generator alternative with no sign-up?
AIPhoto-Generator gives 3 free images with no account, if you need photo-style images from a text prompt. Perchance, DeepAI and Raphael AI also say you can start without one. Perchance and AIPhoto-Generator take text only, while DeepAI and Raphael AI also have editors that accept uploads.
Which alternative handles text in images like ChatGPT?
ChatGPT adds text from instructions, though OpenAI's API guide notes that its GPT Image models can still struggle with precise text placement. Ideogram is built around lettering: JSON prompts set each line's words and position, and Layerize text turns it into editable layers. Canva lets you add real text in its editor, and Adobe Firefly and Leonardo AI offer partner models such as GPT Image 2, which Adobe describes as good at text rendering. AIPhoto-Generator isn't built for text, so leave words out of the prompt and add them in a design tool.
